ANSI ASC X12 Standard
Introduction to ANSI ASC X12 and the most common North American transaction sets.
What ANSI ASC X12 is
ANSI ASC X12 is the leading EDI standard in North America. It was established after ANSI chartered the ASC X12 committee in 1979 to create uniform standards for electronic business transactions across industries.
Today, X12 is used far beyond the United States and Canada because many global suppliers, retailers and service providers must support North American trading requirements. It is especially prominent in retail, manufacturing, logistics and healthcare.
Why companies rely on X12
- broad adoption across multiple industries
- strong acceptance among major retailers and healthcare organizations
- well-defined transaction structures for operational and financial flows
- established control and acknowledgment mechanisms
Common X12 transaction sets
- 810 - invoice
- 820 - payment order / remittance advice
- 850 - purchase order
- 855 - purchase order acknowledgment
- 856 - advance ship notice
- 997 - functional acknowledgment
- 999 - implementation acknowledgment
- 837 - healthcare claim
Implementation note
In real-world X12 projects, partner implementation guides matter just as much as the base standard. The same transaction set can vary significantly from one trading partner to another in required segments, code values and business validation rules, so partner-specific mapping is usually essential.
