VDA Standard

What VDA means in EDI

VDA refers to a family of standards and recommendations created for the German automotive industry. Its purpose is to make data exchange more consistent between OEMs, Tier suppliers and logistics partners. In practice, VDA is closely associated with organizations such as Volkswagen Group, Audi, Bosch, Continental and Daimler.

The standard is especially relevant in supply chains where timing, sequencing and delivery accuracy matter. That makes it common in call-off, shipping and invoicing processes that support tightly controlled automotive production environments.

Typical usage scenarios

  • communication between German automotive manufacturers and suppliers
  • JIT and JIS production support
  • delivery, transport and shipping coordination
  • legacy automotive partner setups that still rely on VDA-specific message structures

Representative VDA messages

  • VDA 4905 - call-off
  • VDA 4913 - delivery note
  • VDA 4915 - detailed JIT call-off
  • VDA 4916 - JIS call-off
  • VDA 4925 - purchase order
  • VDA 4932 - invoice
  • VDA 4970 - delivery forecast

Implementation perspective

VDA is not only a technical syntax. It also reflects automotive business rules, logistics requirements and partner-specific interpretations. For that reason, successful implementations usually require more than file conversion alone: they also depend on careful mapping, scheduling logic and close alignment with OEM expectations.
